Day 4 | Delighting In The Lord

“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:3-4 ESV

In Seminary, one of my favorite classes I took was Spiritual Formation. We had a few assignments on solitude and ultimately, we were asked to spend eight hours in solitude in one day. That felt hard! And then our professor encouraged us to not include a journal or even a Bible – that’s much harder! She told us that this assignment was to help us experience the presence of God in a way we may not be accustomed to.

My whole walk with the Lord up until that point had included a Bible and a journal. How was I going to spend eight hours connecting with God without my journal and Bible? I can’t tell you a specific word or phrase or amazing “download” I received from the Lord that day. But I can tell you that “delight yourself in the Lord” from Psalm 37:4 became so real to me that day. I experienced the presence of the Lord in such a unique and tangible way. Maybe today, you seek the Lord in a way you’re not accustomed to. It might be through a worship song, or it might be through complete silence for 5 minutes. You might seek him by talking aloud to him or maybe by writing in a journal. Find a new way to delight yourself in the Lord today and he will meet you there.

This prayer may be a helpful guide for you today as you seek to grow in your desire for delighting in God: “O Lord our God, grant us grace to desire You with our whole heart, that so desiring, we may find You: and so finding You, we may love You: and so loving You, may rejoice in You forever.” - Saint Anselm
